Google Wave – Wave of the Future?

Google Wave is positioning itself as an evolution in web-based communication/collaboration. Though interesting, I’m not so sure how many everyday regular people would be taking full advantage of this thing.

For one, based on the few details and screengrabs of the interface – this thing is pretty robust. I can only imagine business users having the ability to leverage the power of this tool. It seems to me that it’s trying to pseudo legitimize social networking by giving it a twist of business/work functionality. This is fine if you’re looking for that perfect excuse to explain to your boss why you’re on Gmail/Google Chat all the time at the office (if they haven’t fired you before Google Wave is released).

But for outside of the office environment I can’t really see how Google Wave will benefit the average user. What I do see is a bunch of 3rd-party developers using the platform as a way to create or tie-in existing social networking sites/applications into sort of a “master” dashboard so that we can all finally stop logging into 5 different sites/applications to talk to our friends. If this turns out to be the case then I can see Google Wave completely drowning out any semblance of productivity in the workplace.
